Food & Society Policy Fellowship Announces Fellow

 

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Nov. 14, 2007) – The Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute is pleased to announce Andrea Collier has been awarded a Food & Society Policy Fellowship for 2008-2009. Recipients of this prestigious fellowship were selected from a highly competitive North American group of applicants. The program provides a two-year annual stipend to professionals in food and agriculture from across North America, enabling them to use mass media channels to inform public viewpoints in alignment with the goals of creating sustainable food systems that promote good health, vibrant communities and environmental stewardship. Fellows come from many disciplines: chefs, farmers, nutritionists, activists, public health professionals, fishers, policy experts and academics.

 

Collier, of Lansing, Mich., is a freelance journalist who has written for a wealth of publications, including the Washington Post, USA Today, Newsweek, The New York Times, Ladies Home Journal, Cooking Light, Country Living, Hallmark, the National Medical Association Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, and many more. Her award-winning health memoir, Still With Me…A Daughter’s Journey of Love and Loss, was the first book of its kind to address cancer and end of life issues through the eyes of a black woman. She is also the author of the Black Woman’s Guide to Black Men’s Health. Collier graduated from Indiana University with Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.

 

The Jefferson Institute is a nonprofit organization based in Missouri that conducts agriculture education and research projects. The institute was founded in 1997.

The Black Woman's Guide to Black Men's Health is listed in Ebony Magazine March 2007's must reads! Andrea is also quoted on the importance of women in supporting the health of their men in the February Ebony (with Barack Obama and his wife Michelle on the cover).

Many of us have dreamed about the adulation, wealth, influence and recognition that comes with celebrity, but there can be a tremendous price to be paid for basking in the spotlight.

Join award-winning author and journalist Andrea King Collier in her candid conversation with Malcolm-Jamal Warner from The Cosby Show and Bern Nadette Stanis from Good Times, as they go beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to focus on the real stories.

This program is part of a new series, Chapters, where speakers will tell their own stories, touching on the choices and events that have shaped their lives.

The event will take place at the Lansing Center on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Although this is a free event, a ticket is required to attend. Starting Monday, Nov. 26 tickets will be available at all CADL locations while supplies last.

The Capital Area District Library (CADL) is committed to the learning and enjoyment of the children and adults it serves.  CADL operates 13 libraries and a book mobile which stops at various locations throughout Ingham County.  CADL also offers a wide range of community programs and special events throughout the year.
