Andrea King Collier is the lead author of The Black Woman’s Guide to Black Men’s Health, from Warner Wellness. Collier says that approaching black women and asking them to put focus on the health of the men in their lives was no accident. “We know that the women in our communities are the ones who get their men to the doctor. They make the food choices in the home, and as caregivers and nurturers, they are the first to notice if something is not right,” Collier says. Concerned that the mortality rates among our men are not improving, she says that it was time to develop creative strategies that can improve the bottom line of health in communities of color.
This is not the first time that Collier shed light on issues that have gone undiscussed in the black community. She also blazed trails in conversations about health with her award winning health memoir, Still With Me…A Daughter’s Journey of Love and Loss. It was the first book of its kind to address cancer, and end of life issues through the eyes of a black woman.
Collier has been writing and speaking about health and health policy issues for the past 20 years. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, The Lansing State Journal and the Post-Tribune. Her work appears regularly in Essence, More, Ladies Home Journal, Woman’s Day, O, the Oprah Magazine, Real Health, Healthy Living, the National Medical Association Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, AARP Magazine,Heart Healthy Living, More, and others.
Andrea has been married to Darnay Collier since 1985 (she was a child bride). She is the mother of two children, Nicole and Christopher, who are now older than she is. They live in Lansing, Michigan. Andrea is a native of Gary, Indiana.
